Music

Chandelier Cover by Sara Bareilles

I’ve been in love with Sara Bareilles’ music since I first heard it in high school. She’s one of the few artists where I actually know the lyrics only because I love her voice and her whole style as an artist.

Currently, she’s on tour for her latest album The Blessed Unrest. On her Little Black Dress Tour, she’s been doing a cover of Sia’s newest single, Chandelier. I just found this through Facebook and have been listening to it on repeat for at least an hour or two. No shame at all.

She sings this song with so much emotion that you can almost empathize with her in the lyrics. There’s so much authenticity in the way she sings this song that it gives me the chills. On top of that, it’s acoustic! So more chills!

Here’s the original Chandelier by Sia:

I’ll be listening to the Sara Bareilles’ acoustic version on repeat for awhile. I hope I can buy this online somehow! Thank you Huffington Post for writing an article about how awesome Sara Bareilles is especially live at concerts! She brings a personable character to her shows that makes me feel like I’m actually friends with her!

Tastemade

I found this new app called Tastemade through Kristie Hang who I follow on Twitter. She’s a food blogger in the 626 area and has given me great tips when I went to go check out Newport Tan Cang. She’s definitely a valuable resource when it comes to food and social media. So when she tweeted about Tastemade, I knew I had to check it out!

(This is why I love the power of social media! You just learn new things!)

I quickly downloaded the app and fell in love with it immediately! It’s basically video blogging about the restaurant you’re checking out. What sets Tastemade apart from other social media outlets is that you get a better feel of what the restaurant is like through video rather than just looking at one or two pictures. Sometimes, pictures don’t do justice of how hipster the ambiance of the restaurant is like or even the what the food itself is like. Tastemade enhances your visual sense of the whole food experience.

What’s even more awesome about Tastemade is that they made it easy for users to create a fun video. The app has lot of templates with cute fonts and theme songs to choose from.

You first check in at the restaurant, then pick the template you want to use. The app will then direct you to the next step of the Tastemade process which is to do a 10 second introduction about yourself, the restaurant, or whatever you would like to say. Afterwards, you create various shots of the restaurant. Then, for 15 seconds you talk about the meal.

You shoot another footage of the food and of your friends eating. The last part is the wrap up! And wah-lah! You are done making a Tastemade video! How awesome is that?

I’ve had this app for a little more than a month and I’ve produced 15 videos so far! My first video was pretty rough but I’d like to think that my creativity in Tastemaking has improved! Check out all of my videos here.

I love this app for several reasons that may sound cheesy. One. Like I mentioned earlier, it shows the experience of the restaurant in a different perspective. Two. It challenges me to be creative and to improve my public speaking skills! Three. From this app, I’m able to find new restaurants to check out! So don’t worry, you don’t have to post videos if you don’t want to record yourself. It’s still fun to follow Tastemakers. Four. It’s simply fun! Having my friends be part of the videos and be goofballs makes it so much more fun! The food and the app itself really brings me and my friends together! I’m always looking forward to make more videos.

I hope you download it soon so we can follow each other! Make sure to find me on Tastemade @TinaTalksToday!

Sam Smith

In the past week, I’ve been listening to Sam Smith’s music on repeat through Spotify. The addiction all started when I learned a danced to “Dirty Boy” by La La La which featured Sam Smith.

After I learned the dance, I researched the music at home. From Wikipedia, I learned that Sam Smith is from the UK! He was born in 1992, so you know that means he’s one very young talented singer! I then realized that he is the one who also sings “Stay With Me” which is a beautiful song.

After that, I was caught off guard that he also sings “Lay Me Down” which is another beautiful song filled with heavy emotion.

I’ve listened to all of these songs multiple times before especially on the radio but somehow never knew the artist. If TRL still existed on MTV, I would have learned about Sam Smith sooner! Nowadays, I don’t know who sings what until I make the effort to research it or stumble upon it online just like now.

Question. Am I the only one who’s surprised by how his voice doesn’t match his appearance? There’s so much maturity within his lyrics and in his voice for a young adult! That voice of his is one of a kind. It’s soulful, powerful, and simply unique. Perhaps you can compare him to Adele where they’re both honest in their music and actually talented! And the obvious common denominator is that they’re both from the UK.

I feel relieved now that I know Sam Smith at a personal level after all that research. Ok, back to listening to him on repeat!

Thank you Kaba Modern’s dance class for encouraging me to discover new music. Final thanks to YouTube and Wikipedia for helping me with my research on Sam Smith!

Kevin Garcia | Hunter by Pharrell

I took another class from Kaba Modern at Focus Dance Center but this time Kevin Garcia taught the class! We learned a dance to Hunter by Pharrell. The choreography and the music itself had an old funk soul to it which made it more fun to dance in that style.

The class was pretty challenging because there were some intricate parts to that choreography! When everyone was dancing downwards, I was the one who was up. I was pretty much all over the place as the choreography became more difficult. In the midst of that though, I had a lot of fun and was inspired by the other dancers in that room! Check out what we learned and please don’t look for me but it might not be hard to find me, heh…

Kevin Garcia mentioned how dope Pharrell’s new album, Girl, is. Right after that class, I started listening to his album and I must say, it is dope! There’s a new taste to his style that I’m really digging!

K-Gar aka Kevin Garcia said that he’s more on the quiet side but when you see him dance, you definitely see his personality come out. Watch his group audition in the video below. He’s the one who starts on the right side.

I hope Kevin Garcia teaches more in the future! I’m looking forward to seeing him perform live and on YouTube!

Mike Song | Stranger by Skrillex

Mike Song is a dancer and choreographer who I admire just from watching his work on YouTube. I thought I would never be able to take a class from him because of the difficulty of how meticulous his work is, but when I found out that he was teaching at Focus Dance Center in Irvine, I knew I had to take his class. To be honest, I was really scared because it’s MIKE SONG. He is one creative artist who is so talented that it’s intimidating. I just thought his class would be so hard but it was totally what I did not expect.

He broke down every 8 count so thoroughly that it was easy to remember. Now, the challenging part about the class was to make the moves look good. I couldn’t overcome that challenge because I just don’t have that swag yet. What I cared the most was remembering the choreography. Because I haven’t danced in a long, long time, my memory in picking up choreography isn’t as quick as before. But because he took the time to explain every move clearly, I was able to catch on! Thank you, God!

We learned a fun piece to Stranger by Skrillex. Here’s a clip of what he taught us that night:

After watching him do his solo, I realized that what made the dance look so good was the fact that there were small and natural movements that created a powerful statement. For this choreography in particular, less was more.

Chelsea, this is for you. Check out one of his most popular videos that got him to Ellen Degeneres’ show with his mom:

Ok, one more video! Check this one out also:

If you want to take Mike Song’s class in the future or any other classes hosted by Kaba Modern, feel free to join me at any time! April is a perfect month to take these classes since Kaba Modern is hosting 12 classes this month in Irvine. Each class is $10 to drop in or you can purchase the package for $40 to attend all 12!

Thanks RPM for challenging me this month to be active by trying a new physical activity! Also, thank you Kat, Daniel, and Andrew for joining me spontaneously! Lastly, thanks Mike Song (if you read this), for making this class so much fun and memorable for me and especially for my friends who were first timers in taking a dance class!

Queen Yuna

Though Queen didn’t win gold in Sochi 2014 winter olympics, deep down inside, we all know that she’s a winner in all circumstances. She’s still one of a kind figure skater and forever known as Queen Yuna. No one will ever be able to skate so gracefully and flawlessly like her. She doesn’t skate just to show off some tricks, but the emotional involvement in her programs sets her off compared to any other skaters. She knows how to share a story as she skates so passionately.

Because of the olympics, I somehow started YouTubing quite a few clips of her previous performances. They were all breath taking and inspiring! Her performance on Imagine would have to be one of my many favorites:

She just knows how to skate so effortlessly and elegantly. I’m glad she’s retiring because she deserves much rest after working so hard for so long just to be where she’s at now.

Hope you all enjoyed watching the olympics as much as I did!
